Former Senate President David Mark has been unveiled as the Interim National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The announcement, made during a formal ceremony in Abuja, is seen as part of the party’s broader strategy to reposition itself as a serious contender in the run-up to the 2027 general elections.

Mark, a highly regarded political figure and two-time president of the Nigerian Senate, received his official party membership card at the event. He was joined by former Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola, who was introduced as the Interim National Secretary, in a leadership reshuffle that also brought former Minister of Sports Bolaji Abdullahi into the fold as Interim National Publicity Secretary.

The changes follow the resignation of longtime ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu, who stepped down after years at the helm to make way for a “broader coalition and fresh leadership,” according to party insiders.

The unveiling ceremony drew a high-profile audience, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, and Rotimi Amaechi, underscoring what observers describe as growing momentum among Nigeria’s political heavyweights toward an alternative platform outside of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the internally divided Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Party officials say the leadership transition is the culmination of an 18-month negotiation and coalition-building process aimed at unifying smaller political movements under a single banner.

The ADC plans to accelerate its nationwide membership drive and grassroots mobilization, positioning itself as a platform capable of delivering credible governance and bridging Nigeria’s deepening political and economic divides.

While questions remain over how cohesive and scalable this new coalition will be, political analysts note that the inclusion of seasoned politicians like Mark and Aregbesola gives the party both credibility and administrative experience as it prepares for the 2027 electoral cycle.
