A shocking incident has rocked the Nigerian education system after a female secondary school student was reportedly caught in possession of a loaded firearm, which she allegedly intended to use to shoot a teacher who had earlier instructed her to cut her coloured hair.

The incident occurred at a government-owned secondary school in Lagos State, sparking widespread outrage and renewed concern over student discipline, safety, and the growing influence of social vices within schools.

According to preliminary reports, the student whose identity is being withheld due to her age smuggled the weapon into the school premises concealed in her backpack. She was apprehended by school security personnel after fellow students raised alarms about suspicious behaviour and overheard her making troubling statements.

School authorities say the intended target was a senior female teacher who had issued a disciplinary order for the student to remove her brightly dyed hair, which violated the school’s grooming policy.

“This is beyond disobedience it’s an attempted act of violence. We are shocked,” said a school administrator who requested anonymity. “We thank God for the vigilance of other students and staff who acted swiftly.”

The student has since been handed over to the Lagos State Police Command, and an investigation is underway to determine how she obtained the weapon, whether she acted alone, and if there are any deeper motivations or influences behind the planned attack.

Lagos State Police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest, stating:

“We are currently investigating the source of the firearm and the circumstances surrounding the incident. The student will undergo psychological evaluation, and appropriate legal steps will follow.”

Parents and education advocates have condemned the incident as a disturbing reflection of moral decay, lack of guidance, and weak enforcement of discipline in schools.

“When students can contemplate harming teachers over disciplinary action, it means we’re sitting on a time bomb,” said education activist Mrs. Clara Nwosu, calling for urgent reform and enhanced school security measures.

The Lagos State Ministry of Education is expected to release a formal statement in the coming days, as calls mount for counselling programs, school surveillance upgrades, and stronger collaboration between parents, teachers, and mental health professionals.

The story has sparked heated debates online, with many Nigerians demanding not only justice but also comprehensive school reforms to address rising youth aggression, peer pressure, and exposure to violence.
