The ancient city of Ibadan and indeed the entire Yoruba nation has been thrown into mourning following the death of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who passed away at the age of 90, after a brief illness.

The highly revered traditional ruler, who ascended the throne as the 43rd Olubadan, reportedly joined his ancestors in the early hours of Thursday, July 4, 2025, at his palace in Ibadan, Oyo State. Though the palace is yet to issue a formal statement, sources close to the royal family confirmed the news, calling it “a profound loss to the city and the nation at large.”

Oba Olakulehin’s passing marks the end of an era for the people of Ibadan. Known for his wisdom, humility, and unwavering commitment to peace, the late monarch was celebrated for his ability to maintain stability in Ibadan’s complex chieftaincy hierarchy, and for his tireless efforts to foster unity and development in the region.

“He was not just a king, he was a father to all. His reign brought dignity and cultural pride to the throne,” said Chief Adebayo Akande, a member of the Olubadan-in-Council.

Born in 1935, Oba Olakulehin had a distinguished public service career before ascending the throne. A seasoned administrator and community leader, he was deeply involved in grassroots development, traditional governance, and cultural preservation.

His reign witnessed the modernization of Ibadan’s traditional structure, closer engagement with state government, and increased attention to youth empowerment and education across Ibadanland.

Prominent Nigerians, including Governor Seyi Makinde, traditional rulers, politicians, and cultural leaders, have expressed condolences, describing Oba Olakulehin’s death as a monumental loss to Yorubaland and Nigeria as a whole.

“The passing of Oba Olakulehin is a personal loss to me and to every son and daughter of Ibadanland. He was a stabilizing force, a symbol of tradition, and a voice of wisdom,” Governor Makinde said in an early tribute.

Flags are expected to fly at half-mast across public buildings in Oyo State, while traditional rites have begun in anticipation of the official mourning period. The Olubadan-in-Council will soon meet to announce burial plans and initiate the process for selecting the next monarch, in line with Ibadan’s unique rotational chieftaincy system.

Oba Olakulehin is survived by children, grandchildren, and a legacy that will long be remembered in Ibadan’s storied history.
