The Onishe of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom, Ibori Ubulu, has stirred fresh political debate after declaring that the much-talked-about opposition coalition between Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and Nasir El-Rufai is “a failed experiment” that stands no chance against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
Speaking at a cultural event in Delta State on Monday, the traditional leader didn’t mince words, describing the ongoing alliance discussions as an ill-fated political cocktail driven more by desperation than vision.
“Let’s call it what it is a failed experiment,” he said. “Obi, Atiku, El-Rufai coming together does not guarantee victory. They can’t defeat Tinubu. Nigerians are wiser now, and we must be careful not to recycle politicians under a false promise of change.”
The Onishe’s remarks come amid intensifying speculation about a mega opposition coalition, which is reportedly in the works to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027. Former vice president Atiku Abubakar, ex-governor Nasir El-Rufai, and 2023 Labour Party flagbearer Peter Obi are at the heart of those discussions.
While many political observers believe such a coalition could pose a formidable challenge, others including Ibori Ubulu remain skeptical of its credibility and cohesion.
“You can’t unite the country by simply uniting elites. Nigerians want real solutions, not political marriages of convenience,” the monarch added.
The comments have sparked intense reactions on social media, with supporters and critics of the proposed alliance trading words over the monarch’s bold prediction. Some say his remarks reflect the political realities of grassroots loyalty to Tinubu, while others accuse him of playing into ruling party narratives.
As the road to 2027 begins to take shape, it is clear that the battle for Nigeria’s future will not only be fought at campaign rallies and town halls, but also in palaces, traditional institutions, and public discourse across the country.
