A Nigerian commentator, Emir Sirdam, has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration amid escalating violence and insecurity across several regions of the country, particularly in the north.

In a statement shared on social media, Sirdam said, “Nigerians are more unsafe today than they were before. Nigeria can never work under Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government because he has already taken sides with the political class.”

The remarks come as reports of attacks, mass abductions, and killings continue to emerge from northern Nigeria — regions historically affected by insecurity linked to armed banditry, Boko Haram insurgents, and communal clashes.

In Kaduna State, suspected bandits attacked villages in Kajuru and Birnin Gwari local government areas in recent weeks, leading to multiple fatalities and displacement. In Zamfara and Katsina, residents have reported renewed waves of kidnappings for ransom, with several schoolchildren and travelers among the abducted.

Borno and Yobe States continue to experience sporadic attacks by insurgent groups, despite ongoing military operations in the region. Security sources and humanitarian agencies report that entire communities remain inaccessible due to threats from non-state armed actors.

President Tinubu’s administration has not directly responded to Sirdam’s criticism. However, in recent public addresses, the President has reiterated his government’s commitment to addressing insecurity through strengthened military efforts, regional security partnerships, and economic reforms aimed at reducing the root causes of violence.

Nigeria’s northern region has long grappled with complex security challenges. According to data from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED), the country witnessed hundreds of conflict-related deaths in the first quarter of 2025, many of them concentrated in the north.

Sirdam, who frequently comments on governance and policy through his social media channels, has drawn mixed reactions with his latest statement with some Nigerians agreeing with his assessment, and others defending the administration’s approach.
