Labour Party Declares 2027 Presidential Ticket Open, Signals New Era of Internal Democracy

In a major political development ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Labour Party (LP) has officially announced that its presidential ticket is open to all interested aspirants, dismissing speculation of a pre-arranged candidate or automatic endorsement of its 2023 flagbearer, Peter Obi.

The announcement was made by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, during a press briefing in Abuja on Monday. According to Ifoh, the decision underscores the Labour Party’s commitment to internal democracy, fairness, and transparency, and reflects growing interest in the party as a viable national platform.

“Let it be on record the Labour Party presidential ticket is not reserved for anyone. It is open. Any qualified Nigerian is free to express interest, subject to our party’s constitution and guidelines,” Ifoh stated.

The clarification comes amid renewed coalition talks involving Obi, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and other political figures, as part of efforts to build a united opposition front ahead of the next election. While many supporters have continued to back Obi as the natural LP candidate in 2027, party leadership insists the process must remain open, participatory, and competitive.

“We are a democratic party, not a cult of personality. Whoever wants the ticket must go through the due process. Peter Obi, just like any other aspirant, will have to contest fairly if he chooses to run again,” Ifoh added.

Political analysts have praised the party’s stance, calling it a mature and strategic move to strengthen its national appeal and attract a wider pool of political talent. Others say it may also be a subtle message to Obi and his supporters that no one is above party processes.

Reacting to the development, several Labour Party members welcomed the decision but reiterated their support for Obi, citing his strong performance in the 2023 elections and widespread youth appeal.

“We want a free and fair primary, but it’s clear who the people want,” said one party delegate from Anambra. “Obi still has our trust.”

Peter Obi, who recently stated he is “not desperate” to be president but committed to Nigeria’s progress, has not formally declared his intention to contest in 2027. His next political move is now being closely watched as the party’s timeline for internal primaries approaches.

The Labour Party is expected to release its nomination guidelines and timetable for primaries in the coming months, as it continues to restructure at state and national levels ahead of the next electoral cycle.
