Nigerian football has been thrown into mourning following the death of Peter Rufai, former Super Eagles goalkeeper, who passed away at the age of 61 after battling a prolonged illness.

Popularly known as Dodomayana, Rufai was a towering figure in Nigerian football throughout the 1990s. His family confirmed his passing in the early hours of Tuesday, July 4, in Lagos. Details about the illness that led to his death remain private, though sources close to the family said he had been in and out of medical care for several months.

Born on August 24, 1963, Rufai earned legendary status as one of Nigeria’s most celebrated goalkeepers, earning 65 international caps for the Super Eagles. He featured prominently during Nigeria’s 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory in Tunisia and played at the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups, bringing leadership, experience, and agility to the national squad.

Rufai also made history as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper in Europe, playing for top clubs in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain, including Deportivo La Coruña and Hércules CF.

Beyond football, Rufai was known for his calm demeanor, intelligence, and advocacy for youth development. After retiring, he dedicated himself to coaching, mentoring young goalkeepers, and promoting grassroots sports development across Nigeria.

Tributes have poured in from across the football world. Former teammates, fans, and officials from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) expressed deep sorrow at the passing of a man many described as a national treasure.

“Peter Rufai was more than a goalkeeper he was a leader and an inspiration to millions. His legacy will live on,” said former Super Eagles captain Austin “Jay Jay” Okocha.

The NFF is expected to coordinate with Rufai’s family on funeral arrangements and a befitting tribute to honor his contributions to Nigerian football.

Peter Rufai is survived by his wife and children.
