Passengers aboard an Air Peace flight from Lagos to Port Harcourt experienced a moment of tension on Saturday morning when their aircraft, Flight P47190, skidded off the runway upon landing at the Port Harcourt International Airport.
The airline has since confirmed the incident, noting that the aircraft “slightly veered off the runway” but stressed that there were no injuries, no damage to the aircraft, and that all passengers disembarked safely and calmly.
“The aircraft landed safely but experienced a slight runway excursion. Our crew handled the situation professionally, and passengers were safely evacuated without panic,” the statement from Air Peace read.
The incident occurred under reportedly wet and slippery runway conditions, though weather and technical factors are still being reviewed as part of standard post-incident protocols. Emergency response teams at the airport were promptly activated but found no injuries or fire hazards.
Flight P47190 is a popular domestic route that operates daily between Nigeria’s commercial and oil capitals. The runway at the Port Harcourt airport was temporarily closed for assessment but later reopened for normal operations.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has acknowledged the event and is expected to conduct a formal investigation into the cause of the runway excursion, even as Air Peace assured passengers of its continued commitment to safety.
“We remain a safety-first airline and will cooperate fully with aviation authorities in their review,” the airline added.
This is not the first time Nigeria’s aviation sector has faced such close calls, and the latest incident is likely to renew discussions on runway conditions, aircraft inspections, and weather preparedness in domestic airports.
Social media users and aviation analysts alike have commended the professional handling of the situation by the flight crew and ground staff, noting that the lack of panic and injuries points to effective training and protocol adherence.
