Peter Obi Laments State of the Nation After Brother’s House Is Demolished: “Nigeria Is Finished”

Former presidential candidate and Labour Party stalwart Peter Obi has expressed outrage following the demolition of his brother’s house, declaring in frustration, “Nigeria is finished.”

The emotional statement, which has gone viral across social media platforms, came shortly after news emerged that the property belonging to Obi’s brother was brought down under controversial circumstances. Though full details surrounding the demolition remain unclear, the former Anambra governor used the moment to underscore what he describes as a deepening crisis of lawlessness, injustice, and insensitivity in Nigeria.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Obi did not mince words: “This is not just about a house. It is a reflection of a nation where governance has failed, justice is selective, and property rights mean nothing,” he said. “When a country gets to the point where private citizens wake up to bulldozers without warning or lawful orders, then we are truly in a state of decay. Nigeria is finished, unless we change course.”

At the time of this report, it is unclear which agency or authority ordered the demolition or whether it was done with a court order. Community members in the area have reported seeing heavily armed personnel accompanying the demolition team, fueling concerns about state-backed overreach or politically motivated targeting.

The demolished house is said to be located in Anambra State, where tensions around land ownership, development permits, and political rivalry have recently spiked.

Obi’s remarks have triggered widespread reactions on social media, with the hashtag #NigeriaIsFinished trending across X (formerly Twitter). Many Nigerians have sympathized with him, calling the incident a symbol of a broader breakdown in governance and respect for civil rights.

“If this can happen to Peter Obi’s brother, imagine what the average Nigerian goes through daily,” wrote one user.

As of press time, no state or federal agency has issued an official response or justification for the demolition, further fueling public concern and speculation.

Political analysts say Obi’s reaction goes beyond a personal grievance. His sharp criticism appears to tap into growing national frustration over impunity, insecurity, economic hardship, and institutional dysfunction.

“Obi is speaking not just as a victim, but as a voice for many who feel voiceless in this country,” said Dr. Aisha Madaki, a political analyst based in Abuja.
